A Bust, Grace, and Orphan Sunday for the Family

So, I totally busted.

I could make a thousand and one excuses...family heartache, a surprise trip to Vegas, a 1,001 loads of laundry...

But really it's just I'm so dadgum unorganized.

At the first of October, I had the plan to create an Orphan Sunday devotional for families to process and apply throughout the month of November...it's halfway finished.

So...grace abounds, and look forward to next year when the other half will be completed.

Until then... Consider working through this incredibly simply and practical devotion with your family. This is intended to be used with The Forgotten Initiative's Christmas sponsorship program, but you can utilize it in a number of ways.

A Simple, Three-Day Family Devotional on Orphan Care

Day One:

Read: John 14:16-20
Questions and Prayer:
  • ·      What is an orphan?
  • ·      Have we ever been orphans?
  • ·      How has God not left us as orphans? How is He a father to us?
  • ·      Thank God that He has not left us as orphans. Pray for your sponsored Christmas child and the orphans around the world.

Day Two:

Read: Psalm 68:5
 Questions and Prayer:
  • ·      What things do you love about your father, or what kind of father would you love to have if you do not have one?
  • ·      How is God a father?
  • ·      What are some ways God takes care of the fatherless and the hurting people in the world?
  • ·      Thank God that He cares for the orphans, the widows, and the people hurting around the world. Thank God that He is a Father. Pray for your sponsored Christmas child and the orphans of one special foreign country.

Day Three:
Read Psalm 82: 3-4
Questions and Prayer:
  • ·      Who are the fatherless of our world?
  • ·      What does it mean when God commands us to defend them and do justice to them?
  • ·      Are there ways you are defending the poor and fatherless now as a family?
  • ·      Thank God that He allows us to be part of this fight to care for the orphans and the poor around the world. Pray for your sponsored child and the orphans right here in our country. Pray that God would continue to show your family ways to obey this challenge to your family.

Reflections on Orphan Sunday...

Guest Post from Altar 84's Jodie Frye...
There has been a “stirring” lately, at least in my little world, about a day that is called Orphan Sunday.  So, naturally, I have been pondering, praying, and trying to figure out how in the world to address it, and understand it, with grace and truth.
Just to get the official definition out there, especially for those of you who may not know what it is: Orphan Sunday is a global “day” set aside for Christians {the Church} to stand-up, speak-up, and demonstrate God’s heart for the fatherless.  It is “your opportunity to rouse church, community, and friends to God’s call to care for the orphan.” (CAFO)  This year, Orphan Sunday is on Sunday, November 3rd.
Sounds amazing, right?  So what’s the stirring all about?
Why this “one” DAY?  Some may debate that other “mercy-ministry” groups within the church, such as the sojourner or the widow, don’t get a day for the Church to stand-up, speak-up, and demonstrate God’s heart for them.
I humbly believe the Father’s rhetorical response to this “debate” may go something like this: Well, why not?  At least that’s what He has pressed into my heart.  They too need champions to speak up, defend, and seek justice for them.  If someone wants to create a day for that Gospel-centered vision, I say go for it.
Personally, I need as many stirrings within my complacent self as possible…because I really do desire obedience in the whole Gospel.
“Love is not love until you express it.” (Pastor Billy Chondwe, Zambia)

Here’s the thing…it’s not about the DAY.  It’s about awareness that leads to action, among those for whom the “day” was designed to impact, the Body of Christ.  We need to be stirred.  We need to be wrecked.  We need to fully embrace every thread of the Gospel, every single day that we have breath.
But sometimes, it just takes a DAY for an awakening, whenever or whatever that day may be. Because we are such.flesh, so bent toward our self-centered little worlds and ideologies.
Just think about all the other beautiful, amazing DAYs that we celebrate and embrace. Days that we pause from the normal chaos of our worlds and remember:
Martin Luther King Day
Valentine’s Day
Easter Day
Mother’s Day
Father’s Day
Independence Day
Veteran’s Day
Thanksgiving Day
Birth-day
Christmas Day
To name just a few.
And of those few, how many truly display the Gospel  - the Holy God-man of Heaven entering into the broken sin-man of Earth, to redeem and restore and rescue her {because that is what we truly want to celebrate, right}?
Orphan Sunday was birthed in a small and humble, hard-pressed church in Lusaka, Zambia.  Pastor Chondwe and his 70 member-church simply sought to be faithful with a Gospel-stirring that God was crafting within their souls, on behalf of the widows and orphans within their own community.  And this stirring led to a {God-sized} vision.
Should we, the Body of Christ, really be concerned about one “day” being devoted to Orphan Sunday?
Yes and No.
With transparency, I must confess, I have had moments that I’ve wrestled with one day being set apart for something that should be a part of our every day … especially when that one day may be the only day that a vision is given voice, or maybe just a whisper, within the church or within the heart of the people.   We must steward the missions He entrusts us with, with passion and focus, all year long.
Here’s the truth about Orphan Sunday, or any other day for that matter…it’s about the tapestry of the Gospel, the vision of the Father’s heart, intersecting and weaving into EVERY fiber of our lives.  We must be careful not to compartmentalize the Greatest Commandment and the Great Commission.
But…if it takes a DAY {or a whole month or year} to ignite His Bride, for whatever thread of Truth has been marginalized, then surely, it should be done.  Surely, it displays Love.  Surely, it makes disciples who GO.  Surely, it makes the angels sing.  Surely, it makes much of the Father’s glory.
There is something to be said about the sense of unity that a God-given purpose, on a given day, flames into fire. BUT, remember, it’s not about the day in and of itself.  The focus must be on moving forward with the vision of the day and the Glory of the One who inspired it all.  {And if your church doesn’t ever have a “day”, that’s alright too.  Just keep serving, right where He has you, using your God-given time, talents, and treasures … He sees, He knows, and His Bride will be all the more beautiful.}
“My dear children, let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love. This is the only way we’ll know we’re living truly, living in God’s reality.”  {1 John 3:18, MSG}
To understand more about the {real} vision and heart of Orphan Sunday, watch this beautiful story, “Zambia’s Gift to the World”.
And speaking of vision…maybe the {truth} is that our deepest concern should just be about what is really on the Father’s heart in all of this, and at the heart of this post: the orphan.

Resource Thursday: LOVE Me Some Ashley Mac's!

It has been such a gift to watch my high school and college friend Ashley McMakin, owner of the FABULOUS and famous luncheon spot Ashley Mac's, use her business to promote God's heart for the broken. She's encouraged our hearts quite a few times with dinners on court nights, and I've got some Little Bits who ask for pink cupcakes at least once a week. Be renewed by her story...

Although orphan care had been on my heart for many years, I had the mentality that the ultimate way to care for orphans was to adopt. My husband and I had always planned to adopt one day, and that seemed to be the logical response to James 1:27, right? But knowing adoption was a few years off, I began to wrestle with...what about right now? How do I care for the orphans as God calls me to?  And what about the poor and the oppressed? And how in my little life of comfort is it possible to keep oneself from being polluted by the world?  A few years ago I really began to wrestle through these questions. Finding myself with a wonderful husband, two little boys, a nice house, a successful business, wonderful friends and involved in an amazing church, but I still held this deep sense that God was calling us to more. I remember pleading several things with the Lord;  Jesus, make me more generous, and Jesus, move me towards brokenness. I did not intend to have this theme in my prayers. I am not that bold or courageous. But the Holy Spirit was not letting me get away from this- trust me, I tried!

One day I was sitting in my office working on my computer and a Facebook message from Catie popped up. She was telling me that she sends Ashley Mac’s meals with her foster children when they go back home and how it has really blessed those families. Just thinking about meals from my business being in these homes, feeding people I will likely never meet, brought me to tears. I felt the Lord telling me, Ashley, I love you. Just do what I have created you to do. I gave you the ability to cook and have provided you this business for you to glorify me through it. You are making things too hard- quit trying to dream up all these radical ways to serve me and just do what’s right in front of you!

It really was Catie’s simple note that caused me to realize how the Lord could use my business to be generous and to move towards brokenness...all just as I had been praying. That following week I met with Lifeline Children’s Services to see how Ashley Mac’s could partner with them. We brainstormed and came up with several ways that our food could help. We started providing meals for foster families a few times a month. I am convinced this has been a bigger blessing to me than it necessarily has to the mouths we are feeding. I love learning people’s stories and being able to enter into their lives. Another idea we had was to give the foster children a free cupcake voucher to bring in on their birthday. Once again, a very small gesture but hopefully will make these children feel loved and special on their Birthday. We were also able to host a “cupcake decorating party” last fall where about seven foster children came to our Cafe and got to decorate (and of course eat!) their cupcakes. Seeing those kids faces light up was worth every dime and every second that I spent on it! Food is such a “common denominator” as Catie put it...everyone both needs food, and most people really love food...so we hope that the Lord continues to give us creative ways to serve Him through it.

There are countless other opportunities the Lord is giving us to invest in His Kingdom through our business. To be honest, we now have so many opportunities it can feel overwhelming! What’s that saying...be careful what you pray for!!!  I’m thankful He is opening my eyes to the needs of the hurting and needy around me. I’m thankful He is opening my eyes to my own sin and selfishness when my flesh is begging for everything to be all about me. It’s ironic...the less I think about myself, the more joyful I am. I’ve been meditating on 1 Timothy 6:17-19 as He is continuing to teach me to, take hold of the life that is truly life.

I’ll leave you with a final quote from A.W. Tozer that has become a prayer I continually come back to:

O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me, and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need for further grace. I am ashamed at my lack of desire. O God, the triune God, I want to want thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still.

Thanks for letting me share!
Ashley

What if our businesses and jobs were actually vehicles to move towards the broken in our communities for God's glory? What if our families were launching points for becoming messy with the hurting? So incredibly grateful for this testimony of faith.

Your Highest Form of Worship

I've been considering the subject of worship lately.

worship (verb): to show or demonstrate adoration or reverence

Many of us recognize that as Jimmy Needham sings, "Worship is more than a song."

But I was recently challenged by our dear friend and mentor Fran Sciacca when he asked us, What is your highest form of worship, Catie? When do you feel closest to God?

I thought about my friend Michelle over at A Southern Ruckus, who is passionate about empowering and encouraging adoptive and foster mamas in the journey... so much so, that she's given much of this year to help design an amazing retreat to renew the hearts of women in the orphan care journey.

I thought about blogsphere friend Lindsy at Light Breaks Forth, who is devoted to advocating for the justice of the broken. Her heart for this is so clear in everything she writes and does.

I considered Jamie when he leads worship. Sometimes, he forgets he's even in front of a church, and as he goes crazy man on his guitar and sings at the top of his lungs, his face shows pure delight in Jesus.

For me, it's this little space of advocacy. It's not large, but when I am sharing, writing and encouraging others in their foster care journeys or in their walks as mothers and wives for the glory of God rather than their own happiness ... I am delighting in Jesus. Though I'm called to other things, this sphere strengthens me for the other places I am called to walk.

I'm so grateful for the opportunities I have had and am about to have to worship in this way. In an effort to be intentional with our time and efforts, we've decided to make my venues for this a little more formal, with God's grace. Check out more on my Speaking, Sharing and Writing page.

And don't forget to register for the Unfailing Love Retreat, where I'm honored to helping lead the foster care sessions.
